Planned Parenthood locations in Washington, D.C., and Colorado have notified prospective patients that they can no longer accept Medicaid coverage for care, a result from the One Big Beautfiul Bill Act that Congress passed last week and President Donald Trump signed into law on July 4.
“Following the passage of the so-called ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ into federal law, PPMW is now legally prohibited from accepting Medicaid coverage,” Planned Parenthood of Metro Washington wrote on its website. “Despite this restriction, we’re taking measures to ensure continued care for all in need.”
Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, which covers Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming, posted a similar message on its website.
“As of July 4, 2025, a new law blocks patients who are enrolled in Medicaid from receiving care at Planned Parenthood,” the message read. “This means if a patient is enrolled in Medicaid, they can no longer receive any services at our health centers, even if they do not want to use their Medicaid coverage. We are actively exploring every option to continue supporting the patients and communities who depend on us.”
Although Planned Parenthood isn’t specifically named in the legislation, the law cuts off any federal Medicaid funding for one year to groups “primarily engaged in family planning services, reproductive health, and related medical care.”
U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani, a Barack Obama appointee in New Jersey, temporarily barred the Trump administration and Congress on Monday from revoking Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood following a lawsuit by the abortion provider.
Although the Planned Parenthood Federation of America provides national oversight, the organization is made up of independently operated affiliates. In the aftermath of the judge’s ruling, affiliates have responded differently — some resuming Medicaid services, while others remain cautious amid ongoing legal uncertainty, The Hill reported.
Planned Parenthood of Florida announced it resumed scheduling Medicaid patients following the judge’s order, according to The Hill.
“Over the weekend, we had to cancel appointments for patients that used Medicaid coverage to receive care at our health centers, which was an incredibly painful and stressful process for the patients and the staff,” said Michelle Quesada, vice president of communications for the Florida affiliate. “It’s a rapidly changing situation.”
Adrienne Mansanares, CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, told KMGH-TV in Denver on Thursday, “The impact has been terrible and immediate. I mean, effective at the signing of the budget on July 4, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains was forced to suspend services to all of our patients enrolled in Medicaid.
“It does impact local communities and states at differing rates. So it really does depend on the state laws and the realities of the Medicaid system within each one.”
